The Six Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine

These six behaviors carry most of the long-term weight in chronic disease. Your plan is organized around them, starting with the pillars that matter most in your week.

Whole-Food Nutrition

Mostly minimally processed, plant-forward meals with enough protein and fiber — built around the food you actually like and the week you actually have.

Physical Activity

Daily movement plus two or three strength sessions a week, scaled to your starting point rather than to someone else's program.

Restorative Sleep

Consistent timing, a wind-down that survives a real evening, and a look at the caffeine, light and screen habits shaping your nights.

Stress Management

Practical recovery skills — breathing, boundaries, short daily resets — so stress load stops undoing the rest of the plan.

Social Connection

Relationships and accountability are health behaviors too. We plan for the people who make your habits easier to keep.

Avoiding Risky Substances

An honest look at alcohol, nicotine and vaping, with reduction steps you can hold rather than an all-or-nothing rule.

What People Bring to Us

Most clients arrive with a number they want to move or a habit that keeps slipping. Lifestyle medicine gives that work a structure — six pillars, one plan, and support that continues after the first visit.

  • Low energy and mid-afternoon crashes
  • Weight and metabolic health goals
  • Blood pressure and cholesterol trends
  • Blood sugar and A1c moving the wrong way
  • Sleep that never feels restorative
  • Chronic stress and burnout load
  • Digestion, bloating and irregular meals
  • Building habits that survive a busy season

How it works

1

Baseline Visit

A 30–45 minute review of your health history plus a walk through a normal week of eating, moving, sleeping and stress.

2

Measure What Matters

Targeted labs, body composition or a glucose monitor when they answer an open question — never a blanket panel.

3

Your Written Pillar Plan

A plan built pillar by pillar, starting with the two or three changes most likely to stick this month.

4

Coaching and Retest

Regular follow-ups to adjust the plan, then a repeat panel so you can see what the habits actually moved.

A Different Kind of Care

Our visits are longer, our questions go deeper, and our plans are built around your week. Nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, connection, and substance use do the heavy lifting; labs, body composition and glucose data are the instruments we use to check our work.

Lifestyle medicine for Central Texas adults

Two clinics cover the metro from opposite ends. Our Hutto office on E. Wilco Highway is the closer visit for people in Hutto, Round Rock, Pflugerville and Taylor — often adults juggling a long commute, shift work at a nearby plant or distribution center, and a family calendar that leaves the 6 a.m. slot as the only free hour. Sleep timing and portable meals carry most of the early plan there.

Our West Lake Hills office on Bee Caves Road serves central Austin, Westlake, Bee Cave and Lakeway. Those visits skew toward high-output professionals whose labs look acceptable while energy, recovery and stress do not — the group where a 45-minute visit and a targeted panel usually surface something a 12-minute appointment missed.

Live outside Texas or travel constantly? Consultations, lab reviews and follow-ups run by secure video in all 50 states, with draws completed at a Quest location near you.

The first six months, honestly

Habits take longer than a month to hold, and we would rather set the timeline than let you infer it.

Month 1 — pick two pillars
Baseline visit, targeted labs, and changes in the two pillars carrying the most weight right now. Usually sleep timing, protein and daily movement — nothing exotic.
Months 2–3 — read the results together
We walk your panel line by line, in plain language, and connect each marker to something you can act on this week. Add-ons such as a glucose monitor or an InBody scan enter here if they answer an open question.
Months 4–6 — retest and taper support
A repeat panel shows what actually moved. Visits stretch further apart as your routine holds on its own, and many clients shift to quarterly check-ins from here.

Questions

Lifestyle medicine questions

What clients ask most before their first lifestyle medicine consultation in Austin.

What is lifestyle medicine?
Lifestyle medicine uses evidence-based changes in nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, social connection, and substance use to prevent, treat, and often reverse chronic disease. It works alongside conventional care, not in place of it.
What are the six pillars of lifestyle medicine?
Whole-food nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, social connection, and avoiding risky substances. Every plan we write at Victory is organized around those six, and we start with the ones carrying the most weight in your week.
What does a typical week of changes look like?
Usually two or three specific actions, not a total overhaul: a fixed sleep window, protein at breakfast, two strength sessions, or a ten-minute walk after dinner. We add the next layer only once the current one feels routine, which is why plans built this way tend to hold past month three.
Do you use lab testing?
Yes, selectively. Labs, InBody body composition and continuous glucose monitoring are supporting tools that tell us whether the pillar work is landing. They are chosen because of a question your story raised, not run as a standing panel.
Can I see a lifestyle medicine provider virtually?
Yes. Initial consultations, follow-ups, lab reviews, and coaching visits are available by secure video in all 50 states and U.S. territories. Lab draws and InBody scans can be completed in person at our Texas clinics or at a Quest location near you.
How long before I feel a difference?
Sleep and energy usually shift first, often inside three to four weeks, because that is where the earliest changes land. Lab markers such as fasting glucose, A1c, triglycerides and inflammatory markers generally need 10 to 12 weeks before a retest says anything meaningful, which is why we schedule the follow-up panel rather than repeating labs early.
Do I have to stop seeing my primary care doctor?
No. Your physician stays your physician. We work in the space they rarely have appointment time for — the daily habits behind the numbers on your chart — and send a written summary of your plan and lab reviews to their office whenever you authorize it.
Is lifestyle medicine covered by insurance?
Our coaching and lifestyle visits are self-pay, which is what lets visits run 45 minutes instead of 12. Many clients pay with HSA or FSA dollars, and lab work ordered through Quest often bills to insurance directly. Our HSA and FSA page walks through how to check eligibility before you book.
What should I bring to my first visit?
Any lab work from the past 12 months, a current list of medications and supplements including doses, and a rough picture of a normal week of eating, sleeping and movement. If you wear a fitness tracker or have used a glucose monitor, bring that data too — it saves us weeks of guessing.
