How to Lose Weight After 40: An Austin Coach's Playbook

The same deficit that worked at 30 stops working at 45. See the five-lever playbook our Austin coaches use, and compare weight loss coaching options.

The most common sentence we hear in a first weight-loss consultation is some version of "this used to work." Cut the snacks, add a few runs, and ten pounds would leave within a month. At 43 or 51, the same effort produces two pounds and a lot of resentment. Nothing about you got weaker in character. What changed is measurable, and once it is measured the plan gets much simpler.

What actually changes after 40

Three shifts stack on top of each other. Lean mass declines quietly — adults lose roughly 3 to 8% of muscle per decade after 30 if nothing is done about it, and muscle is the tissue that spends energy at rest. Daily movement collapses without anyone deciding to be sedentary: longer work hours, more driving, kids' schedules, and Austin summers that push everyone indoors. And sleep gets shorter and more fragmented, which reliably raises appetite and lowers training quality the next day.

Add hormonal change — perimenopause for women, a slow testosterone decline for men — and the same 500-calorie deficit that once produced a pound a week now produces a plateau and a bad mood.

The five levers, in order

  1. Protein first. Most clients arrive somewhere near 60 grams a day and do best between 100 and 140. Protein protects lean mass in a deficit and does more for appetite than any tracking app.
  2. Two or three resistance sessions a week. This is what decides whether the weight you lose is fat or muscle. It is not optional after 40 — it is the whole reason the result holds.
  3. Steps before cardio. A consistent 8,000 to 10,000 steps beats a heroic weekend workout that wrecks Monday. We plan the indoor version of your walk in May, before July removes it.
  4. A sleep window you defend. Seven hours with a consistent bedtime changes hunger, training output and afternoon decision-making more than any supplement in the cabinet.
  5. Then, and only then, the deficit. A modest one, held for a quarter, with the four levers above already in place.

Most people invert this list — they start at step five and wonder why it stops working. The order is the intervention.

Measure so you are not guessing

We open with a body-composition scan on the InBody 580 so fat mass and skeletal muscle are tracked separately, and often a PNOĒ breath test to see what your resting metabolic rate actually is rather than what a formula predicts. When measured rate comes back well below predicted, cutting calories harder is exactly the wrong move. Labs get reviewed by a provider when the history calls for it.

Re-measuring every 8 to 12 weeks is what turns a diet into a system. The scale can drop four pounds and be bad news; it can hold flat while a scan shows five pounds of fat gone and muscle added. Only one of those tells you what to do next.

What a realistic quarter looks like

Half a pound to a pound a week, a waist measurement moving faster than body weight, strength numbers going up rather than down, and energy that holds through the afternoon. Clients who chase faster than that almost always lose muscle to get it, and muscle is the thing that makes month nine possible.

The deeper mechanics of the first two levers — how much protein, how to distribute it, how to progress lifting without wrecking recovery — are worth their own read: see protein and strength training for fat loss after 40.

Where medications fit

Some clients are appropriate candidates for medically supervised weight care, and that is a conversation with a licensed provider after a real evaluation — never a decision made from an article. What we will say is that medication changes appetite, not body composition. Without protein and resistance training beside it, a meaningful share of the weight lost is lean mass, which is exactly what sets up the next stall.

Getting started in the Austin area

Testing happens in our West Lake Hills clinic on Bee Caves Rd and our Hutto clinic, with clients driving in from Rollingwood, Bee Cave, Lakeway, Round Rock, Georgetown and Pflugerville. Coaching between visits is virtual, so the drive is only for measurements.
