Wellness Testing in Austin: What to Measure Before You Start
VO2 max, resting metabolic rate, body composition, CGM and functional labs — what each test answers, who needs it, and the order we run them in Austin.
Almost every plan that fails in the first eight weeks failed because nobody measured anything at the start. Without a baseline there is no way to tell whether a stall is metabolic, behavioral or simply invisible progress. Here is what we measure in our Austin-area clinics, what each number answers, and the order that keeps testing from becoming an expensive hobby.
Body composition (InBody 580)
Two minutes, no fasting drama, and it separates fat mass from skeletal muscle with segmental detail and hydration. This is the single most useful repeat measurement we take, because it turns "the scale moved four pounds" into "fat mass fell five pounds and muscle held." Re-scan every 8 to 12 weeks.
Resting metabolic rate (PNOĒ breath testing)
A breath test measuring what you actually burn at rest instead of estimating it from a formula. It matters most for people with a long dieting history, because measured RMR meaningfully below predicted changes the plan direction — you eat more and train differently rather than cutting again.
VO2 max and cardiorespiratory fitness
VO2 max is among the strongest measured correlates of long-term health, and it is trainable at any age. Testing gives you real training zones instead of guessed heart-rate ranges, which is why the same 45-minute walk produces very different results for two people. Details on our VO2 max and metabolic testing page.
Continuous glucose monitoring
Two weeks of glucose data shows how your specific breakfast, afternoon slump and evening meal behave — information no lab draw at a single moment provides. It is the most behavior-changing test we offer, because feedback arrives the same day you make a choice.
Functional labs
Provider-reviewed panels covering thyroid, fasting insulin, A1c, lipids, ferritin, vitamin D and hormones as indicated. Interpretation and any treatment belong to a licensed provider; coaching uses the results to shape routines, never to diagnose.
The order we run them
- Free consultation. History first — it decides which tests are worth your money.
- Body composition. Cheap, fast, repeatable baseline for everyone.
- Metabolic breath testing. When weight has been stubborn or the diet history is long.
- VO2 max. When performance, endurance or longevity is the goal.
- CGM or labs. When energy, glucose or an unexplained plateau is the question.
- Re-measure. Every 8 to 12 weeks, against the same baseline.
Cost and coverage
Testing is priced individually and in bundles, and much of it can qualify for pre-tax payment with documentation — see our HSA/FSA guide. If weight is the reason you are reading this, the testing sequence above is built into the plans on our Austin weight loss coaching page.
All testing happens in our West Lake Hills and Hutto clinics, with clients traveling from Rollingwood, Bee Cave, Lakeway, Round Rock, Pflugerville and Georgetown.
